Couples counselling provides a space to carefully listen to each partner’s perspective and to explore what is happening within the relationship.
The first 30 minutes are spent listening to one partner’s perspective, including what they are currently experiencing and finding difficult. The following 30 minutes are spent listening to the other partner.
During the final 30 minutes, the experiences and perspectives shared by both partners are brought together to explore what is happening within the relationship, including recurring patterns, misunderstandings, and difficulties in communication. Together, we consider how these patterns may be understood and how the couple might approach them going forward.
For couples in international or intercultural relationships, differences in language, cultural background, family values, expectations, and everyday ways of living can also influence the relationship. Rather than viewing these differences simply as differences in personality, the counselling process takes each partner’s background into account while exploring ways to understand each other and find greater mutual understanding.
By looking at recurring difficulties from an outside perspective, couples counselling can provide an opportunity to better understand each partner’s experience and explore ways of building a more satisfying relationship.
